Electoral Fraud in Venezuela – Once Again?

On October 15 2017, elections for regional governors were held in Venezuela. 17 of the 23 state governorships were won by candidates of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela. The country’s Opposition, however, refuses to accept the results and accuses the government-loyal electoral body (National Electoral Council – NEC) to have committed fraud.
Electoral irregularities are nothing new in Venezuela. In July this year, the Opposition alleged that the NEC had manipulated the results for the constituent assembly’s elections. Last year, the NEC has ruled out a recall referendum to oust President Nicolás Maduro which provoked widespread oppositional protests.
