On February the 19th presidential elections will be held in Ecuador. Whereas supporters of Ecuador’s Citizen’s Revolution (Revolución Ciudadana) express the hope that Rafael Correa’s successor Lenin Moreno will continue the country’s revolutionary process, many political analysts recognize the end of an era. Even in case of a clear win of Lenin Moreno the new president will be confronted with two principle problems absent during Correa´s terms in office, i.e. a lack of personal leadership and a smouldering economic crisis.
Correa’s refusal to run again is another sign of a backlash of the leftist governments in Latin America.
